BMOP's annual portrait concert features the music of the 2020 NEC Malcolm Peyton Composer Artist-in-Residence Joseph Schwantner. Featuring the Boston premiere of his Percussion Concerto #2: Concerto for Percussion Section, Timpani, & Orchestra, concerto competition winner violinist Ilana Zaks performing Angelfire, and his Pulitzer Prize-winning Aftertones of Infinity. BMOP-NEC Composition Competition winner Lavell Blackwell's Effleurage opens the concert.

Immerse yourself in new music from BMOP/sound and composer David Felder on the first release of 2020: Les Quatre Temps Cardinaux. Taking its title from a poem by René Daumal, translated as "The Four Cardinal Times", and incorporating works from Daumal and three other poets, Felder's large-scale song cycle is composed for 40 musicians, two solo voices, and 12 channels of surround-sound electronics. Soloists Laura Aikin and Ethan Herschenfeld join BMOP for this sophisticated electro-acoustic work.

Steven Mackey: Time Release is the composer's second BMOP/sound CD, featuring percussionist Colin Currie on the title track. The rest of the disc explores the coexistence of marine life and city life on Urban Ocean; "Shadow Chords" in Tonic; and Latin clave rhythms in Turn the Key.

For the second time in three years, the composer of a BMOP-commissioned work is the winner of the Grawemeyer Award for Music Composition. Composer Lei Liang won for A Thousand Mountains, A Million Streams, premiered by BMOP in April 2018. More information about the work and the award here.

Drawing on the composer's admiration and scholarship of Berg, Bartókian, and Stravinskian aesthetics, George Perle: Serenades collects three important orchestral works by a twentieth-century master, offering a three-decade snapshot of George Perle's never-ending quest to refine his "twelve-tone tonality." Pianist Donald Berman and violist Wenting Kang join BMOP as soloists.

Odyssey Opera and BMOP team up for their fifth collaboration to present the world premiere of The Chronicle of Nine: The Tragedy of Queen Jane by Arnold Rosner. Featuring soprano Megan Pachecano as Lady Jane Grey, this opera tells the story of her nine-day reign which ended with one of English history's notorious beheadings when Mary Tudor's supporters claimed the crown in 1553.

Klezmer clarinet superstar David Krakauer joins the Boston Modern Orchestra Project as soloist for two works: Lament/Witches' Sabbath by Mathew Rosenblum and Concerto for Klezmer Clarinet by Wlad Marhulets. BMOP continues its exploration of modern classical music inspired by Jewish traditions with two works by Avner Dorman: Uriah and Ellef Symphony.
