bass

Bassist Karl Doty was born and raised in Duluth, MN. He began piano and singing at an early age, and was awarded honors in both. In middle school, he started playing bass guitar. The next few years were spent playing and singing in rock bands, until jazz sparked Karl’s interest in the double bass.

Karl came to Boston in 2003 to begin studies at the New England Conservatory. He received his Bachelor’s degree in performance in 2007, and his Master’s degree in performance in 2009 on a full scholarship from the same institution.

Although he is primarily a classical performer, Karl stays active in a variety of music. He had recorded and toured in with a variety of musicians including Edgar Meyer, Darol Anger, Heather Masse, the Borromeo String Quartet, Joe Walsh, Michi Wiancko and Morning Zephyr, to name a few. Karl is planning a collaboration with A Far Cry violinist Jennifer Curtis which finds both musicians playing multiple instruments and singing.

Karl has toured and recorded for EMI with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. He has also performed as a soloist with BMOP and the Lake Superior Chamber Orchestra. Other groups that he has performed with include the New Century chamber orchestra in San Francisco, Walden and Andover chamber players, solo bass with the Gardner chamber orchestra, guest principal bass with the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra and principal bass with the New Bedford Symphony. Karl has toured internationally as part of the Schleswig-Holstein and Verbier festival orchestras.

Karl is a founding member of A Far Cry.
