BMOP restarts its Boston ConNECtion Concert series in partnership with the New England Conservatory with a portrait concert of Ellen Taaffe Zwilich. The return to Jordan Hall features four orchestral works by the pioneering American composer, including her Symphony No. 5 "Concerto for Orchestra." Longtime BMOP members Sarah Brady and Gabriela Díaz take center stage, performing two Zwilich concertos, Concerto Elegia for flute and string orchestra and Commedia dell'Arte for violin and string orchestra. In October, we announced As Told By: History, Race, and Justice on the Opera Stage, the most extensive and ambitious presentation of opera by Black composers to ever take place in the US. Starting with Anthony Davis’ X: The Life and Times of Malcolm X, As Told By is a series of five operas that depict vital figures of Black liberation and thought across 250 years of history.

Gil Rose and the Boston Modern Orchestra Project (BMOP) bring their vital support of new music to the Library in their first appearance in the Coolidge Auditorium. With an immense discography built since its founding in 1996, BMOP continues to advocate for new music and works that are not yet well-represented in the discography. Their Library program features the music Charles Wuorinen and Roger Reynolds, including Wuorinen’s Library-commissioned work for violin and piano. It promises to be a revelatory concert of music composed in the last 35 years.

BMOP's annual portrait concert features the music of the 2020 NEC Malcolm Peyton Composer Artist-in-Residence Joseph Schwantner. Featuring the Boston premiere of his Percussion Concerto #2: Concerto for Percussion Section, Timpani, & Orchestra, concerto competition winner violinist Ilana Zaks performing Angelfire, and his Pulitzer Prize-winning Aftertones of Infinity. BMOP-NEC Composition Competition winner Lavell Blackwell's Effleurage opens the concert.

Odyssey Opera and BMOP team up for their fifth collaboration to present the world premiere of The Chronicle of Nine: The Tragedy of Queen Jane by Arnold Rosner. Featuring soprano Megan Pachecano as Lady Jane Grey, this opera tells the story of her nine-day reign which ended with one of English history's notorious beheadings when Mary Tudor's supporters claimed the crown in 1553.

Klezmer clarinet superstar David Krakauer joins the Boston Modern Orchestra Project as soloist for two works: Lament/Witches' Sabbath by Mathew Rosenblum and Concerto for Klezmer Clarinet by Wlad Marhulets. BMOP continues its exploration of modern classical music inspired by Jewish traditions with two works by Avner Dorman: Uriah and Ellef Symphony.
